Missionary aviation
August 1, 2007 08:42

Pilots, mechanics, families, ground crew... missionary aviation is a big job with all kinds of different aspects.  The deserts of Africa, the jungles of Mexico, the tundra of northern Canada - airplanes are flying all over the place to bring relief supplies, to connect friends and family, and to bring the light of the Gospel.

Missionary Aviation

Sometimes Christians in missionary aviation are hard to pin down - they don't always serve in only one country, and sometimes they move their families all over the world.  But here are three of the missionary aviation bloggers out there that are keeping us up to date on what God is doing on and above the earth....
  • Where in the world are the wilsons?  Well, you figure it out.  Another good question - where in the world are the Wilsons from?  A Scottish Dad, and Australian Mom, and two South African kids, serving the Lord in the world of aviation.
  • Slaubaughs in Madagascar - well, we know where they are (at the moment).  Lots of pictures of the big island here, from a Canadian family.
  • The Carwell Blog - serving the Lord in missionary aviation in Haiti.  He was born in the USA, she in Iran.  They met in Haiti.

  • From all over the world, flying above the world to all over the world, with a message from beyond this world.  Right on!

    Care packages - WOW
    August 8, 2007 19:46

Yes, we finally have our super-amazing-conglomeration of incredible missionary care package ideas!  All I can say is WOW.  Thanks to all of you who posted great ideas!  I was amazed at all the good ideas, sometimes surprised, but they were all great.

A couple things - first, if I missed anyone who posted in the last couple of months, or even when I asked you earlier, please let me know.  I was juggling so many sites for this one I wouldn't be surprised if mistakes were made.  Let me know!

I decided not to quote any whole posts.  I included a few quotes, and then just wrote a collection of ideas with links at the end.  I think it works ok!

You all did such a great job, I've come to a decision.  I'm going to pick someone at random who participated and send them a care package - courtesy of Missionary-Blogs.com!  Something small, probably - just a little thank you.

If you'd like to donate toward this care package, you can donate here.  Even $5 or $10 would be great!  I'll announce the winner in a bit here.

Anyway, thanks again to all who participated!  We can now benefit from your wisdom.  If you want to send someone a care package, here are a whole bunch of great ideas!

    Send someone a care package!

    Disasters
    August 17, 2007 09:46

What do our bloggers have to say about some of the world's recent disasters?  Often there's not a lot said, unless someone happens to be RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of the situation, or involved in relief work.  However, here are some posts regarding current disasters:
    Earthquake (2005)

First the earthquake in Peru.  Here are some early posts:
  • Our supper last night was rudely interrupted by the strongest tremor we have felt in more than 18 years of time in Peru...  This blog has also posted Earthquake in Peru, part 2 and Earthquake in Peru, part 3
  • Becca is A little "shaken up", and writes about My own aftershocks
  • The Poe family also writes - Earthquake!  These guys were also interviewed by a news station in the USA - read about it here.

  • Finally, another typhoon is heading for Taiwan:
  • The third typhoon in less than a full week is coming Taiwan's way. We've had rain, rain, and more rain...  Later, not just rain--flooding too
  • At the moment, it's all about Storm Prep.

  • There are many more disasters I could mention - please pray that believers around the world can be lights in the darkness of physical and spiritual disasters worldwide!

    They blog a LOT

    Prolific bloggers

I think it's great to update your blog once a week.  If you don't update once a month, people might think you've forgotten about them.  However, there are some bloggers that go above and beyond - several times a week, once a day - maybe even more!  These aren't necessarily in depth articles, sometimes just a link or a few pictures.  But it does keep things interesting!

So, here are some of our most prolific bloggers (I don't have a scientific way to do this, so it's just a sampling in no particular order):

  • les Davey de France - for a long time one of our most updated blogs
  • following an unknown path - out of Taiwan.  Pictures, stories, links - beautifully done!
  • Simplicity - lots to read here about Kenya
  • The Poulette Family has a lot to say, especially considering they have a separate blog for videos too
  • The Heart of the Matter - out of Ukraine
  • Jumping between the UK and Africa - Kouya Chronicle
  • Somewhere in South America - a relatively new blog, right now with lots on the Peru earthquake
  • An even newer blog in Taiwan - Sandy's Neipu Notebook
  • garcias2chile (A Missionary Wife's Journal)
  • theag_news - lots of pictures, that's a big part of this blog.  But these guys also have two blogs - theag_news ministry fills out the picture nicely (out of Mexico)

    Sick kids
    August 27, 2007 08:47

I was going to write today about some new blogs, but after doing some reading I decided to take a very different route.  One of our newer blogging families has had some major family health issues, and I realized they're not the only ones.  So today I'm going to point you to just a few families with sick kids.

Dealing with medical issues is hard enough in one's own country, but even more of a challenge when you're working in a language, culture and system you're not familiar with.  Harder still when you're dealing with medical issues in two countries, as people often end up doing!

Let's start with a blog entitled Czech in on the Chumbleys.  Payton Chumbley is 3 years old and has Ewing's Sarcoma (an agressive form of bone cancer).

    Visit www.CaringBridge.org
The Chumbleys have set up a special journal for Payton using a service called CaringBridge.  CaringBridge has spaces for photos, a guestbook and a journal, but unfortunately it doesn't have a news feed.  However, you can sign up to be emailed when the journal is updated.  Visit Payton's site here.

The Chumbleys aren't the only family I know using CaringBridge.  Kaitlyn Contreras is part of a family serving in Mexico.  At the age of 4 (this July) she was diagnosed with a brain tumor.  She's on the long road to recovery now, and wondering when she can get back into her own room in Mexico.  Start at the beginning of her journal to read the amazing path God has let this family through...

Normally we feature cross-cultural missionaries here, but I'm going to include one more family I recently heard from because it fits so well with the theme, and I'm sure they would appreciate your prayers as well.  Andy and Kristi Corley and their three children are serving in the area of computers and internet technology.  Their daughter Alex is 8 years old, and is dealing with seizures (and lots of treatment!).  You can read updates on Alexandria Corley here.  Recently, Alex has also been serving her best friend who was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, a form of cancer.

Please pray for these and many other families dealing with serious issues like these.  Do you know of others that are blogging?  Leave a comment!
