They're going to Moldova

So where are short term missionaries going these days?  Well, believe it or not more and more of them are going to Moldova!  Where, you say?  Don't tell me you don't know where Moldova is.  It's a country in Europe with a lot of sunflowers (among other things, of course).  If you're still confused, be sure to visit our page all about Christian missionaries in Moldova.

Anyway, let's check out a few of those who are on their way to Moldova short-term, or finishing up their time in Moldova.
  • Jennifer to Moldova - preparing to leave for Moldova
  • Mission Moldova - teaching in an orphanage
  • Moldova and the mission - working in an orphanage with children ages 6-15

    Missionary communication
    June 9, 2007 19:30

Recently this website was mentioned in an article of Lausanne World Pulse.  The article was A Call to Kingdom Journalism: Rediscovering the Integral Role of Communication in Mission by Steve Knight.  I encourage you to read it and give it some thought.  It's good to think every so often about how we communicate.

It is important to communicate, because it's all about showing how great God is in our lives!  That's why we're excited here to see more missionaries blogging and telling us what the Lord has done.

The article was written by Steve Knight, and I'd actually like to recommend his personal blog to you as well.  He describes his blog as resources for "describing God’s mighty works" around the world.  It will keep you thinking about how to do this, especially if you're a missionary with a website or a blog.  The blog is called Kingdom Journalism.  Steve is international communication coordinator for SIM.

A website (especially one with a blog!) is a great way to communicate - if you're a believer, you might want to consider this as a way to share what God is doing in your life.  If you do have a website, why not write about a missionary that you want to encourage, or link to this site so that more people can meet missionaries from around the world!

    Preparing for Australia
    June 11, 2007 18:26

It's always fun to hear from missionaries who are just preparing to move their lives into a new culture.  I recently came across the blogs of some people that are about to do just that - destination:  Australia.

Take for example, the author of Ye Olde Blog.  Actually, he hasn't posted for a while (hope there's more soon!), but he's also got a MySpace page with more information about his current ministry (warning: the page plays music when you land on it).  What brought this move about?  Read the post from the 22nd of January for the details.

Secondly, please check out the blog of Gerard & Rebecca Adriaanse.  They've been in Costa Rica and Aruba, and are now getting ready for the big move down under.  These guys are involved in radio work and website design.

Now that you've checked those out, why not visit some of the missionaries that have been in the country for a while - read more about missionary work in Australia

    Care packages revisited
    June 20, 2007 16:50

Back in September I wrote a post suggesting that our missionaries write about care packages.  At the time, I didn't have the chance to properly follow up, so we're going to try again.  If you wrote something back in September, that's ok - just let me know and I'll check it out.

You can read the original post for the details, but the basic idea was to have some of you write a post to give people ideas of what they could send a missionary to encourage her or him.  The deadline now is the end of June.  I emailed some of you, but I don't have all your email addresses.

Once you've posted, let me know.  I'll include the best ideas (and a link to some of your posts) in a new page here.

Now, this idea is driven by supply and demand - in other words, people want to know what they could send missionaries that would actually help or encourage them.  That's why I'm doing this - to come up with general ideas for those people.

But I really failed to realize how difficult it is to write a post on your own blog without sounding greedy, discontent or self-serving!  I understand if you choose not to do it altogether, but here are some ideas for you if you'd like to participate:

  • Tell people that you're doing it because of that guy over at Missionary-Blogs.com.  You're supposed to do that anyway, it was one of the "rules", but it helps if people know this wasn't your idea.  It's my fault!
  • Make your ideas general.  You don't need to write about what you want, just write about what would encourage missionaries in general.  After all, you're the people who know!  If you don't tell people how to help missionaries, they will forever be guessing.
  • Just add a disclaimer (some of you did this already) - tell people you are content, and really don't need a box of Hershey's Special Dark Kisses.  However, if they're looking for a way to make your day....
  • Write about a great care package you got in the past, and why it encouraged you.
  • Tell people why you don't want certain things (for example, duty may be charged, you have enough, etc)
  • Mention materials that would nourish you or your family or friends spiritually.  Do you wish you had great Christian books in English?  Would small toys be useful in childrens' ministry in your area?
  • I'm especially interested in ideas that would apply in many countries, not just yours.  You can give country-specific examples, but if you can also tell us how this may apply in other countries.

  • Thanks to those who have already posted!  Let me know if you haven't already.  Remember, check out the original post for more ideas.

    A sense of comfort
    June 28, 2007 14:28

One of the reasons I appreciate reading missionary blogs is because they remind me about the world outside of my little world.  A part of that world - a big part - is suffering.

We have a hard time looking at it honestly, and then we have a hard time acting on it.  Sometimes we have a hard time writing about it.  We like to be comfortable, and we like to make other people comfortable too.  Here are some recent posts about the battle we're in and the pain we see...

  • Outreach Campaign and Spiritual War - invading the darkness with light
  • A Child's Appeal - the reality of the lives of children in another part of the world
  • And another thing - the suffering around us... how do we think about it?  And how do we write about it?  Is it time to stop giving people "a way out"?

  • Have you read any posts that made you face suffering of other in a new way?  Leave a comment!
