Think about these...
October 6, 2006 01:09

Well, my friends, it's time for a good old survey of a few recent posts.  There have been some great ones lately - thought provoking, searching, and sometimes haunting.  Take the time to read these:

  • Reflecting on the recent shootings in an Amish community in the USA, a blogger posts about her own Amish Roots
  • Do you "love the lost"?  Check out this quote from Dr. Sam Horn on The Heart of Biblical Missions
  • You've heard of jet lag, but there's another dimension - Heart Lag
  • How can the Church help?  The question is asked in the opiate of the Mass-es
  • She's talking about writing books, but the question applies to many other things - Commercial or Literary or Both?
  • A collection of questions - some that many missionaries ask.  Sometimes I Wonder

    Take a stand in Siberia
    October 10, 2006 15:49

    Southern Siberia

It's been a while since I've featured a short term missionary here.  Part of the challenge is that I usually see how good the blog is after the short term trip is half over.  But this one I've caught right at the beginning...

James Witherow, originally from Saskatchewan, Canada, is now preparing for a tour which will include North America, Russia, and (I believe) England.  He's training and doing ministry in Canada with his team, and will be leaving shortly for the overseas portion of his year.  His blog is called THE REALM OF ALCAR, and you can even subscribe to his feed at encaitar777.blogspot.com/atom.xml.

It should be exciting to hear about James and his team as they serve the Lord in Siberia and beyond.  Leave him a comment and let him know you've prayed for him!

    Glimpses of Africa

Today our feature is some interesting posts from Africa.  Here are a few that caught my attention.  If you'd like to mention others, leave a comment!

  • I think this post says a lot - Security?  And while you're at it, here's a prayer request from the same blog, Help??
  • Some people love 'em and some people hate 'em.  Lovely. NOT!
  • Every once in a while you get a real glimpse of a real person who is in need.  Here's a great example - read about Pepe.
  • It's interesting to get a glimpse of this stage of translation work - the Mara Word Collection
  • I love the pictures from Adele, like the one you see above from Sunset.

  • By the way, you may have noticed that all our missionary in Africa blogs have been put in one section.  At the bottom of the main Africa page are links to more related pages.  As time goes by, the navigation bar will contain more regions and less specific countries, but the country pages will still be here (and there will be more of them!).

    A taste of Hindu culture
    October 24, 2006 09:06

    Fireworks
This past weekend a Hindu festival took place - Diwali (Deepavali).  Diwali is called the "Festival of Lights".  It symbolizes the victory of good over evil.  The celebration is also important to Jains and Sikhs.  It's celebrated all over the world, in India of course, but also in Nepal, Canada, the UK, the US, and many other countries

I thought this would be a good opportunity to point you to some posts, new and older, that talk about Hindu culture.  First, this recent post about Diwali.

  • A little about meat in Nepal (or, there's nothing like pizza in Nepal)
  • Celebrations of the Teej Festival
  • A visit to Southwest Bangladesh
  • Someone to pray for from Mission Safari
  • Another festival - Enjoying Durga Puja

    What's old is new again...
    October 30, 2006 07:54

I like to write about new missionary blogs here in order to give them a bit of a "boost" as they start out in the great big world of cyberspace.  However, not all of the blogs that are added to the aggregator are new.  As a matter of fact, many are not - they're old blogs that I *gasp* neglected to add!  So today I thought I'd introduce you to a few blogs that are new enough to me that you've never seen them on the blog list - but they've been around for a while.  Take for example:

  • Musings of a Mutating Missionary - her profile starts out by saying she's a romantic.  She's in Germany, and has been blogging since the middle of 2005.
  • The Youngs - Charles and Kristin are serving in Swaziland, Africa.  They've been blogging since August 2005.
  • And another one - Straight from Swaziland - thanks to Patrick, whose blog dates back to September 2005.
  • Wired Wisdom, started in June 2005, comes out of Romania and focuses a lot on adventures in homeschooling
  • Just one more - MexicoMinistry:  Mellberg's Missionary Update.  This blog started in July 2005.  You can probably figure out the country

  • If you're new to the world of blogs, you may wonder how blogs from mid-2005 are "old".  Maybe old was the wrong term, but the "new" blogs I write about are usually from the last 6 months.  Maybe old was the wrong word, but in the world of missionary blogs, a year is like 1000 years...
